Meet our Founders
Stephen Durham - CEO/Founder
With over 20 years in the beauty business, Stephen started by running a chain of successful salons in London, Urban Therapy. With locations in the trendiest neighborhoods like, Camden Town, Notting Hill, and Battersea (Nappy Valley). He honed his talents within the industry and developed a love for it.
During his time in the salon business, he realized that there was a gap and a need in the hair industry for effective, performance-driven products that would work on women who have trouble maintaining thick curly hair. He responded by creating the mega popular and award winning Twisted Sista, range of products. Twisted Sista was voted Best Shampoo and Curl Product by Cosmopolitan and Best Curl Product Latina Magazine. After the success with Twisted Sista, Stephen then went on to develop his current line, American English, a luxury vegan hair care range that is packed with natural nourishing ingredients. The styling products are not only safe for daily usage, but are actually good for your hair and scalp, over time, the texture and quality of your hair improves.
Michael Kanyon- Creative Director

Combined with a passion for geometry, Michael fell in love with hair cutting at the age of 14. Born and raised in New York, Michael was in the best place to start his high fashion hairstyling career. Michael sought out the mentorship of John Sahag, famous editorial fashion hairstylist and dry cutting specialist. Michael worked along John Sahag for years learning first hand the Sahag Dry Cutting Technique and editorial tips and tricks. After working with John Sahag, Michael found mentorship with Patrick Melville who kept Michaels knowledge growing in the freelance fashion world. Michael has worked for fashion magazines such as Vogue, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, and many others. His work with advertising campaigns includes: Ray Ban, Samsonite, J Brand and many more. Because of his unique cutting technique, always fashion forward sense, plus his winning personality, he was able to build a long list of High Fashion Models and A-list celebrity cliental. One of most crucial turning points to his career was to be appointed as the Key Stylist on America’s Next Top Model. Michael then realized he was destined to break the mold of the stereotype of what people assume a hairdresser is, or can be. Michael met Stephen shortly after on an advertising job where they got along seamlessly and discussed the ever growing need for a nourishing hair product that actually works, thus started the journey for American English.
